The new recommended convention for Japanese names in Western languages calls for the family name to be printed all in capitals. I have seen this for years in the author listings for academic or scientific papers printed in European journals (eg, something like "Carl MACEK and ITANO Ichiro").
True. I'm also with The Economist in not following the convention to the point of making people look silly. (Unless someone specifically says they want their name written that way.)
