142 days to go
Jun. 14th, 2020 06:47 pmOregon's reopening is "paused" this week as covid-19 hospitalizations are rising again. Which is at least slightly better than being in any of the other states where hospitalizations are rising, where the official reaction has been "meh, whatever".
On the police front, Portland's relatively mild protests have led to a relatively mild shakeup in the city police department. The chief has resigned to let a black officer take over. She's also said she hadn't really been aiming for the top job anyway when she was appointed a few months ago, and it had been a great surprise to her, so the department goes from one unprepared leader to another. The new guy has said some vague things about making policing more community-oriented.
Out here in the distant suburbs, there is nothing to complain about but the rain. I've belatedly remembered why it's been raining since the end of May: it's Rose Festival time! It always rains when the Rose Festival starts! It's not just a local joke. There is a system, named the Rose Festival Low, which tends to form in early June and send us a bunch of rain just when summer is supposed to be taking over.
I noticed this week that time has restarted. For a while there it was getting hard to remember what day it was, and I assumed that was just part of the whole staying-home experience. But now that the convention world and the gaming world are moving online, and I have things to look forward to on the weekends, it's suddenly not hard at all.
