I said back in April that I expected the US would be quarantined from the outside by July. Things haven't moved as fast as I imagined, but here we are, left outside first major travel bubble, the EU and its list of safe countries.
The latest news from the medical people at work is that while Oregon did very well during the initial shutdown, we now have the highest R
0 in the US. My county, which was the first hotspot in Oregon, still has one of the higher rates of infection in the state. I still see a few people at the grocery store not wearing masks. This is going to take a while.
My workplace has gone from "nobody has to come back before Labor Day" to "don't count on coming back right after Labor Day". I've answered a survey, and also said in the (virtual) presence of my boss, that I'm not interested in coming back to the office until it's safe to ride public transit again. Which I have realized means the end of the year, at minimum, the earliest that a vaccine might become generally available.
At least the SO is taking this well. In fact, the SO claims to have anticipated for years that I would eventually wind up in some kind of job where there would be no office to go into.
So we hang on, for now. The sun is shining, the days are long, the stores have no more bizarre shortages, and there's lots of online Pathfinder to keep me sane.
