The upswing, week 14
Apr. 25th, 2021 09:02 pmIt is a proper cold and showery Oregonian spring weekend, following a week that did finally settle down after Monty's tooth-cleaning appointment.
Oregon is starting to look more and more like the rest of the country in virus statistics. Our vaccination rate is still around the national average, our dominant strain is now B.1.1.7, and we're heading toward taking a turn as the hotspot. Positivity rates are touching 6%, and indoor dining is probably going to be banned again in some counties on Tuesday.
At least overall vaccination counts haven't started slowing here yet. At the current rate, every adult in the state could be fully immunized by mid-summer. Except the whole idea of reaching herd immunity is now being downplayed at the national level, as the number of people saying they don't plan to get vaccinated, set against substantially more contagious variants, raises the awful possibility that covid-19 may hang on in the US for a long time. Here's hoping some minds change soon.
