Spring anime premiere thoughts
Apr. 16th, 2022 06:15 pmThe side effect of not writing for Amazing Stories anymore is that anime content here will increase somewhat. I'm probably still going to feel compelled to at least share some thoughts on premieres from sheer inertia.
Estab-Life: Great Escape: Okay, yes, this has bargain-basement CGI and the extraction team is mostly schoolgirls for no reason. OTOH, I expected the extractees to be teenage malcontents, but in both the first episodes the clients are easily past 50. Anime is just as reflexively ageist as Western media, so it's a real shock to see a show endorse the idea that people can still make a fresh start and chase their dreams in later life. I am surprisingly charmed by this so far.
Also, kudos to whoever came up with the character who is a literal moeblob.
Ya Boy Kongming!: Turns out to be just another exercise in "what have we not combined idols with yet?". Does not help that I hate the songs.
Spy x Family: It's... fine. A lot of what happens feels very predictable. It might be just because it's still in the setup phase. I'll probably give it another episode or two.
Healer Girl: Pleasant enough, not quite my kind of thing but wholesome and upbeat and with a whole lot of very nice singing.
Love After World Domination: Definitely not this season's successor to Miss Kuroitsu. It isn't even half as funny, and the camera has a lot of trouble pointing far enough up to get the female characters' faces in the frame.
All the terrible-looking shows set in generic fantasy worlds: DID NOT WATCH because I don't have to! Ha! The buzz is that all of them indeed suck, except maybe The Executioner and Her Way of Life if you can stand an annoying secondary character.
As for my most anticipated show, Summer Time Rendering, Disney+ is apparently following in the footsteps of Netflix by sitting on the international broadcast for an indeterminate period of time. Phooey.
