Seasonal SF anime check-in
Jun. 28th, 2022 06:20 pmEstab Life: Great Escape is no masterpiece, but it wound up being my favorite show of the past season. It's got some neat sfnal ideas, though I definitely do not recommend it to anyone who isn't already inured to certain kinds of anime nonsense.
The only other thing I watched all of was Spy x Family. I couldn't really get into it until I took the suggestion of the opening and closing sequences and approached it as though Anya is the main character. Once I did that, the main problem was that there are some episodes where Anya is hardly present. I could never bring myself to care about any of the adult characters.
For the next season, I can at least link you to Anime News Network's encyclopedia, with shows sorted into handy categories...
Long-awaited adaptation of beloved classic: Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer
Remake of beloved classic: Tokyo Mew Mew New
Cute sports girls: Extreme Hearts
Cute supernatural girls: Call of the Night, Engage Kiss
Cute fighting girls who run cafes: Lycoris Recoil, Prima Doll
Idols: Phantom of the Idol
Tokusatsu tie-in: FUUTO PI
Terrible-looking isekai: Black Summoner, Isekai Yakkyoku, My Isekai Life
Isekai I would actually check out if it weren't going straight to Netflix jail: Uncle From Another World
Continuations I might check out just because I made it through the previous seasons: Shadows House, Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth
Continuation I won't check out even though I made it through the previous season: Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun
Continuations I don't care about but maybe you do: The Devil is a Part-Timer!!, Dropkick on My Devil! X, Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? IV, Orient, Overlord IV
Assorted weirdness: Chimimo, KJ File, Yurei Deco
For anyone who stayed interested enough to read through all that, if you're looking for an anime-oriented Discord community, may I recommend Animoo Chat. It's run by Scamp of Day With the Cart Driver, and has members all around the world although the center of gravity seems to be in Europe. Channels include the usual sorts of open chatting, ones for seasonal anime ratings and first impressions, and one where a screenshot showing the day's date is posted every day and people try to guess what show it's from.
