Some anime premieres
Jul. 11th, 2022 05:36 pmNot out of the habit of checking out pretty much anything sfnal out yet...
Yurei Deco: My most anticipated show of the season, and so far, so good! Though some people are having trouble with the candy-colored aesthetics and the weird speech patterns of one of the major characters.
Lycoris Recoil: The big surprise of the season, in that it's actually good. Not only that but very self-aware about how the premise it's borrowing from a million other shows is kind of messed up.
Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth: Picks up straight from the end of the previous season, and I was surprised by how much I remembered about the huge cast of characters. OTOH I realized that I just don't care about any of them.
Shadows House season 2: It was okay. I haven't read the manga, so I can't speak to how much it's still deviating to recover from bringing in a bunch of later material at the end of season 1. I can say everyone's acting like it never really happened.
Tokyo Mew Mew New: Wow, what a flashback to the days before Madoka Magica. Did not expect the environmentalism angle. Also surprised by this turning out to be in the Fighting Girls Who Run a Cafe category, so that's three of those this season. Part of this being an old-fashioned magical girl show is that it's aimed at 12-year-olds, so not watching any more of this, but I'm glad to know it's out there.
Chimimo: Exactly as weird and cute as promised. Too laid-back for my tastes, but recommended to people who like laid-back slice-of-life shows with a dash of weird.
Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer: Felt very, very generic, probably as a result of over a decade of works that could have been inspired by it getting adapted first. The intertubes are full of the wailing of longtime fans deeply disappointed by the production quality.
And there's lots more where those came from, and I have more to catch up on. But speaking of buzz, there are a couple of shows that I'm not watching which are worth noting.
One of those is Teppen—!!!! Laughing 'til you Cry, about five trios of aspiring manzai comedians living together in a dorm. The show itself is said to be meh, but it has everyone's favorite OP of the season so far:
Also somehow this is the show that had to cancel an episode after Abe Shinzō's death because of a plotline involving an assassination.
The other is the new season of Made in Abyss. Apparently the premiere dives back into questionable material early and often. You have been warned.
