Local politics
May. 13th, 2023 05:39 pmThis morning I filled out my ballot for Tuesday's election and dropped it off at a drop box near the farmers' market.
There's nothing big on the ballot for this one, no statewide or even county-wide races, just a whole lot of elections for members of various citizen boards that run local utility districts, fire protection districts, etc.
I did notice that an unusual number of the races were contested, with an unusual number of candidates who were immigrants and described a background working with refugees and intentions to make local government more responsive to marginalized residents. As though someone in a local immmigrants-helping-refugees organization observed that if they had that much spare time and wished that local government was easier to work with, they could go try to be the local government. Good luck to them; I voted for some of them.
