Best to avoid MeWe... it's founder is a member of the Alt-Right and it shows in regards to what goes on there.
My other location of note is over on pluspora, but pluspora is part of the diaspora network and that uses a software package that has no group mechanism, instead you create your own 'Aspects' (a Circle like mechanic that GPlus had before it had groups/communities and is more private).
