Cable is a good idea. I was going to suggest a beefy USB wifi adapter with a big antenna. They're cheap, err, less expensive than a repeater.
If you have an Android phone, WiFi Analyzer is a free app that displays signal strength. Speedtest.net tests your upload and download speed.
