Just wanted to say this is a really great trip report. I haven't actually heard of the sinkhole that ate a Corvette, though. How unfortunate.
As an Australian, I've done one American road trip (g). We travelled from Denver to Santa Fe - we being me and my two friends in their beloved Jaguar. They have a garage best described as a Jaguar shrine.
