Seeing the usual In-Love-With-Failure and/or disruptors saying don’t take or post photos.

If you’re saying this: THERE IS MORE THAN ONE KIND OF PROTEST.

Don’t take photos at a direction action were laws may be violated, of course. But this isn’t that kind of protest. This is a LOUD AND VISIBLE protest, where showing massive numbers is the entire point, and having lots of sources posting massive numbers is more critical than ever.

A flood of sources is important, because the more A.I.-generated images are used to flood the zone, the more many sources of photographs matter. We have to out-flood their flood.

Now, if you are taking photos, don’t take close-ups without permission! That’s always true. But I advise that you DO take and post WIDE AREA PHOTOS which INCLUDE PEOPLE WHO COULD FIT IN AT A MAGA RALLY.

Middle-aged white men in particular.

MAGAts don’t give a shit until it’s them. If you see someone and think “yeah, they look like they could be someone at a Trump rally,” include them in the shot. That’s what they need to see.

You want to scare Trump, make it look like he’s losing “his people” to opposition rallies in your photographs.

No time to rewrite this better, I’m out the door. See you on the streets.

No Kings Day

Today’s the day. It’s not too late to get out there. In Cascadia, most protests haven’t even started yet. If you can’t do the mornings, some protests start late – Lake Forest Park’s protest starts at 4:30 in the afternoon.

So find your local No Kings protest and show up. More different protests are better, not worse; one huge protest is easy to crack down upon; a dozen across the same area is impossible.

All protests right now are important, but today’s is particularly important.

Get out there. Go.

(And didn't we have something similar, like, maybe 20 years ago on LiveJournal?)

Thing going round on bluesky recently-

'Ten authors you've read five books by'.

*Looks around just one room and its bookshelves*

Me: Maybe I could break this down into groups, I dunno, perhaps?

Thrillers? Sff? Litfic? (might break this down further into Obscure Victorian/Edwardian Novelists, Middlebrow Women Writers of the 20s/30s, the 60s Generation???) Bloke writers for whom I have a weakness? Beloved childhood faves?

And then I think, nah, this is too much effort.

I was a bit took aback by suggestions that people might be curating their 10 to look Cool or SRS or at least, not given to ingesting The Wrong Sort of Book, perish the thort.

Today is cloudy, mild, and damp.  It rained off and on yesterday.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

EDIT 6/14/25 -- I put out water for the birds.

I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 6/14/25 -- I did more work around the patio.

I've seen a skunk on the patio.

I checked the new picnic table and septic garden.  The first of the 'Chocolate Sprinkles' tomatoes is showing color.  :D  One of the chocolate cherry tomatoes has its first green fruit, and so does the 'Carmen' Italian sweet pepper.  The yellow squash just bloomed.  The zucchini has flower buds.

EDIT 6/14/25 -- I started trimming some low-hanging branches from the Home Base mulberry tree.  I filled a trolley with twigs and leaves, then dumped it in the brush pile.

EDIT 6/14/25 -- I trimmed more branches, filling another trolley.

I've seen a catbird and a mourning dove.

EDIT 6/14/25 -- I trimmed more branches, filling another trolley.

I found the first couple of ripe raspberries along the south fence in the ritual meadow.  I'll have to check the prairie garden tomorrow.

EDIT 6/14/25 -- I found a second log for the base of the next bonfire and put that in the firepit.  I started building the criss-cross chimney above it but then it got too dark to find the right kind of sticks.  I'll have to finish that tomorrow.

The fireflies are coming out.  :D  There are lots more tonight.  They love this warm damp weather.

I saw at least 2 and probably 3 bats.  They're quite large for microbats, so likely big brown bats.  See bats of Illinois.  I'm thrilled to have bats, because the mosquitoes are also coming out.  Fly, my pretties, fly! \o/

As it is now dark, I am done for the night.

This morning, residents of a town not far north of me (about 2 small city borders away in the metro) were ordered to shelter in place and to call 911 to ask if the officer at their door was supposed to be there, before engaging the officer. Why? Because someone with police uniform, gear, and vehicle shot 2 of our lawmakers inside their own homes.

I took some time off from work (I'll have to cut my lunch break short today to make up the time difference) to watch Governer Walz in the press conference on tv this morning. The DFL Representative is dead, and the DFL Senator is alive after surgery. For the non-locals, Minnesota's state Congress is evenly divided. All it takes is losing 1 representative and 1 senator to shift the balance of legislative power in this state. It appears that someone tried to do exactly that. Murdering-the-opposition-party is the logical consequence of letting any party think they can seize power over vacant seats, as happened here earlier this year.

I hope they catch the shooter(s) alive. I hope they live at least long enough to get a pardon from Trump eventually. I expect I-could-shoot-somebody Trump to do it. We live in the bad timeline.

I don't want to work today. I want to leave my job and go join the local No Kings protests. But, I'm poor and old and have to "keep my job". Ugh.

So Cal doesn’t want me to try to navigate the stairs yet, but I can try tomorrow. Fair enough; I’m having Symptoms that are concerning to me, but not quite enough to bother my doctor, although google says I might want to do so. Meh.

I’m hoping to finish Suikoden 2 today. Or at least pass the Rockaxe event. OR even just gather the rest of the stars. But first: some writing. Or rather, repairing files. I want to try to get Dragonsinger as restored as possible today.

Two weeks after seeing the CGI Lilo and Stitch at the cinema I'm watching the original with the kids. And it's so much better. The direction, the writing, the acting are all just much higher quality.

The remake felt much clumsier. And I don't really understand why.

Edit: Just realised that they entirely cut the Ugly Duckling part from the remake. Why would you do that? It's key to Stitch's arc!
And all of the bits where Lilo how to be like Elvis.

In fact, nearly all of the bits where Lilo talked to Stitch and built a relationship with him.

Name:Rafi. If you come across this post or my profile and you think "hmm, looks familiar," that's possibly because I changed my DW name several months ago. It used to be "Emerald Em."

Age:58

I mostly post about:My daily life, my writing, my disabilities, autism, mental illness, being queer, my wife, fanfic, my gender journey, chronic illness (feh!), the political reality I and my people live in

My hobbies are:writing, crocheting, studying Wicca

My fandoms are:The West Wing, Man from UNCLE, Criminal Minds, some others

I'm looking to meet people who:share similar interests,

My posting schedule tends to be:three or four times a week, sometimes more often

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: TL;DR = don't be a bigoted jackass. Longer version: no queerphobia of any kind, no Trumpers. Be open-minded. Accept my lived experience in my queer self and my disabled body and mind. I welcome respectful questions if you have them, though.

Before adding me, you should know:I don't always have the spoons* to comment on all the new posts that pop up on my reading page when I log in. But I do do my earnest best to read the posts. So I generally know what's going on with my DW friends. Also, the mini-bio in my profile is currently (as of June 14 2025) pretty short--I'm working on updating and lengthening it--so it might not tell you much. If you have questions, please ask!

I am AFAB nonbinary, and again, happy to answer respectful/curious questions. But no phobias. If you don't like it, lump it and move along.

Over on tumblr, there is a new gimmick poll blog, for the sexiest (male; sorta) 80s rock star. They took submissions from wherever, but that was before I saw the blog, so I don't know the details, but I've seen Australia, NZ, USA, (possibly) Canada, UK, and at least two European countries represented (I'm reasonably sure Sweden and Germany, but ah, memory like a thingy).

Anyway, there is a Lot of nostalgia happening.

Each poll has two people, I have to pick the 'sexiest'. Some of them I recognise, sometimes I recognise the name or the band but couldn't have picked the photo out of a line up. Some I'm entirely voting for either the hair (so many fabulous hair styles), the make up, or because they were in a band that I remember a friend being absolutely gaga over. Occasionally I'm picking someone because I look at the alternative and say 'oh hell no'. Very few of these people do I consider to be 'sexy'. But I'm going to be Pissed if Prince doesn't make it to at least the last round, because I'm not sure I've seen any better options.

But I'd like to reiterate: the hair! Such a loss that such fabulous hair styles have been abandoned.

My fave is the semicolon; however, I refuse to cede em-dashes or any other punctuation marks to ChatGPT.

These attacks on the em dash — a ChatGPT hyphen? How very dare you! — have in turn blazed across social media spaces populated by the kind of folks who will tell you, unprompted, that they have a favorite punctuation mark and what it is. (It is very likely the em dash.) — https://www.salon.com/2025/06/11/ai-cant-have-my-em-dash/

In (near) Prague

On an ice hockey camp in Slaný, near Prague. I flew out on Thursday afternoon with two friends from Kodiaks. We arrived at the rink hotel in time to check in, have a little walk down to the nearby supermarket and get food, and settle in for the night. For reasons the three of us were all sharing a dormitory room the first night, and we decided the perfect film to watch over our picnic dinner was Inside Out 2 - also set at a 3-day hockey camp. I hadn't seen it before, though the other two had, and I enjoyed it very much.

Friday morning was pretty relaxed; a fourth Kodiak joined us after leaving home at awful-o-clock in the morning, and we were moved into the nicer ensuite twin rooms in pairs for the rest of the camp. We met in the dressing room at 1pm, were on ice at 2pm and again at 6pm, with a stickhandling session in between. Then dinner at 8 and falling into bed not long after.

It's excellent coaching, I'm being pushed well out of my comfort zone and the balance of drill and rest in each session and between sessions is just right. I hit my "cannot actually skate any more" limit about 3 minutes before the end of the last ice session.

Today will be two ice sessions at either end of the day, with video review (argh), optional swim+spa (yes!), and stickhandling again in between. My muscles this morning are making themselves known but I'm not exhausted. All is good. Time to go get changed.

Got my orthotics today. My foot still hurts. This is taking too long to sort itself out and I wish to register a complaint.

***

Lord Brock has figured out what time steroid dosing happens and has started reminding me about it because he knows he'll get treats immediately after. He still hates getting medicated, but he hates it so much less than the gabapentin (I think it tasted worse) that he will almost barely tolerate it and then happily snarffle up the treats once the dosing part is done with.

***

Roof repairs unlocked. Dude also does the kind of work needed for the stairs so he's going to give me a quote for that as well. AND he thinks he can work with his plumber to drop the sump pump into the floor properly so it takes up less space and won't leave an open water feature in the room. He send me some links with examples of what he wants to do, and honestly it would be a huge improvement.

***

Project raccoon did NOT go as originally planned. Original contractor had said that the stairs would just flip up so I could clean underneath them. No, not so much.

The problem is that the wooden stairs are basically a triangle set in a sunken concrete hole. The back/top of the stairs is supported by a piece of wood in the shape of a T. To get under them you have to pull the whole thing towards the interior door to make room behind the triangle to flip it up on it's back. Only the T isn't solid enough, when I tried it the bottom of the wood stayed in the same spot while the top cracked and splintered. I was able to climb to the top and kind of kick the T forward but not far enough to make room to flip it. So I could stand there and hold the stairs up, because they're not heavy, but I couldn't get under it at the same time.

Yesterday and today daughter came over to work on the yard, and this afternoon the ex-housemate & their wife dropped by to pick up some government forms that had been delivered to the house. So the four of us picked up the stairs bodily and moved them out of the staircase. The ex-housemate has anosmia, so they volunteered to shovel up the very very decayed raccoon. Garbage day isn't for another two weeks so we just dumped him out by the railroad tracks and covered him with dirt. And then shovelled up the accumulated mud and vermin that had collected under the stairs and dropped it in the same spot.

It was so gross, y'all. So gross. But it's out of my basement doorway now and it's in a spot where it will be unlikely to bother anybody except the occasional passing coyote.

The daughter and I spent the next three hours digging the drainage pit. I found the sand layer I was hoping for, and then underneath that (about four feet down) is a layer of a broken shist which I think will work even better. We have probably about 80% of the trench dug out - one more day should be enough to finish if off. Then I'll line it with cinderblocks and start filling it in with rocks. The trench is probably four times as big as I'll need to be in any normal year, but since 100-year storms are coming every 10 years now (and probably every 2 by the time I ever leave this house) it seems like a good investment of labour.

Entertainment was provided by a juvenile robin that realized all that turned earth was a worm goldmine and got increasingly braver about getting close enough to us to grab them as the day progressed.

Then we ate our own weight in pizza.

Needless to say, every part of me hurts after two days of digging, so I'm taking tomorrow off doing any more building/fixing things. Chores only. And I might check with the local massage clinic to see if they have a free spot because I know I'm going to feel like somebody worked me over with my own shovel.

Yay, the Prussian was allowed to go home today. Tomorrow, Tron and the Lumberjack will arrive at our house, bringing sandwiches from our favorite coffee shop. It's very exciting to think of seeing them, because they haven't been here since Tron started cancer treatment last year. She has been adjuring me not to do a lot of work, but to take it easy so I'm fully recuperated for the trip next week. I'd like to ignore this kind advice, but I don't think I could even if I wanted to. The Sparrowhawk and I seem to run out of gas so easily of late. We have managed to put sheets on the beds. Our biggest accomplishment of the day was to go to the farmers market and finally obtain the first of the long-awaited strawberries to share with the kids. Both of us ordered new shoes, and they came in the mail and seem to be suitable. Mine are another pair of New Balance 990s, my favorite. The Sparrowhawk decided his hands-free Kiziks weren't sturdy enough for cobblestones, and is trying some hands-free Skechers. Otherwise, I'm struggling with the usual packing problem: the balance between wanting plenty of convenient things, and not wanting to carry all those things. It's only a week. I could theoretically take some shirts and underwear in a paper bag. But I don't want my appearance to be any more eccentric than it usually is. I'm trying to make up my mind to NOT take my laptop with me. It could be an intervention. Prove I'm not addicted!

Weather predictions indicate it will be in the 90s all week along the Danube. SIGH. I wish I could go to Europe sometime when they're not having a heat wave. I'm feeling so discouraged because none of the things I hope to get done so everything around my house would seem nice to me and so I could show off to the kids--hey, look how great things are since the last time you came!--are happening. Ever since that ill-fated trip to Pittsburgh, it's just been a whole lot of nope around here. I'm trying to keep my spirits up, but they do droop occasionally. I'm grateful to my peonies and to my white rosebush for blooming anyway. That is some comfort.

We finished off the potato salad from Sunday, along with some tomatoes and some eggs with mushrooms, cheese, and corn for dinner. I cut up a box of strawberries. We've been going to bed early, and perhaps will do so again. It doesn't always work, because sometimes we wake up in the middle of the night, but it seems very luxurious in theory.

A year ago I was enjoying the second day of the uni's conference, continuing to play Tunic, and looking forward to a day off.

Today, I followed my plan of playing a lot of COE33 and not much else. I'm wandering around the world map, looking for big uglies to beat up and finding places to explore. Every time I think I've gone into ALL the places, I find another one. I'm currently taking part in the Gauntlet. There are a few places that still have red entrances. I'm at L64/65, so nearly at another trophy.

The Gestrals swap Double Diad cards. I'm dying!

I also did some washing, had a bath, and chatted to husband.

A nice, restful day - just what I needed.

We want to do some planting in the front. Current plan is a large raised bed, so there's only one patch to take care of. I'm going to look for plants that are interesting all year round. My brain is also racing ahead to summer houses and vegetable plots - stop brain! One step at a time :D
