Gray and gloomy and damp again this week. Things should brighten up for Memorial Day weekend, which I will be spending inside because it's time for PaizoCon Online again.

A few days ago, Oregon joined the growing list of states planning a lottery for vaccinated adults. Ours is a one-off, covering everyone 18 and older vaccinated by June 28. There's a $1 million top prize, plus a $10,000 prize for each county. As Oregon has some very sparsely populated counties, and those tend to be are where vaccination rates are lower, some people have pretty good odds there. For those under 18, there will be five $100,000 grants to be used for college or trade school education.

Personally I think these lotteries are a reasonable use state funds. If you have a significant population of people who don't have any big barriers to getting vaccinated other than their own hesitation, $2 million is probably a lot less than you'd have to spend on advertising to change their minds. (Just as long as you don't put all the money into the lottery, and also address aid for people who do need help with transportation, etc. to get vaccinated.)
