In The Castle of Otranto, the original Gothic horror novel, devotion to St Nicholas is an important part of the plot, as are the Crusades. Otranto is of course in the general vicinity of Bari, but it's also in the historically Greek-speaking part of southern Italy. Around the Greek-speaking Mediterranean, devotion to St Nicholas is exceedingly widespread. In fact, the Metropolitan of Denver had to make a rule that no new parishes in his jurisdiction were to be named for St Nicholas, because there are already so many. Other common ones are SS Constantine and Helen, St George, Dormition, and Three Hierarchs.
