Beyond seeing how many translations I can think of off the top of my head (3: 家人, 家族, família), well, I can think of several definitions. One's the blood relations you get. The others are about the family you build, the people who are close to you and who are recognized with special status by your statutory and social systems. Friends with legal benefits, I guess?
I think most of my answers to the daily questions will be more interesting than this one.
