58 days to go
Sep. 6th, 2020 07:45 pmIt is meteorological fall, but you wouldn't know it from the heat. It's also moderately smoky. The sunbeams are orangish in the morning and the evening, and the sky turns gray down toward the horizon. Normally wildfires are a big part of the local news at this time of year, but either Oregon is having a much, much better fire season than its neighbors or they're just getting pushed out of the headlines by the protests and the plague.
I've been thinking about conventions and what has become much more widely known about the spread of respiratory diseases in general. Most everyone knows to wash their hands before eating and take care with utensils that other people have touched, but now we're all learning about the increased potential for spread from being in an enclosed space with lots of people talking.
I've caught colds at Enfilade!, the regional historical miniatures gaming con, the last couple times I've gone. I'd assumed it was because it's an environment where you touch a lot of things that other people have touched, but now I'm thinking of the fact that it features 300+ people crammed into one main room, all shouting to be heard over all the other games.
One sign of fall that is showing up on schedule is the noticeably later sunrise. True to my resolution about not forcing myself to observe daylight savings time, I have left my alarm off, and my sleep schedule has shifted so that I'm not waking up until after 7am some days. (Hey, I'm a morning person, and that's late for me, okay?)
