Hamburger-Barley Soup

I hadn't tried a new soup recipe in a while. This one came out great.

1 teaspoon vegetable oil
1 lb lean ground beef
1 large yellow onion, chopped
2 stalks celery, chopped
2 carrots, chopped
1 can chopped tomatoes
1/2 cup pearl barley
4 cups beef stock or broth
1 cup water
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
1/4 teaspoon dried marjoram
1 bay leaf
1 teaspoon salt

Just the thing for the unseasonably cold weather we've been having.
