A propos of nothing in particular — it's not as though the isekai concept isn't capable of giving us good anime. Both Magic Knight Rayearth and El-Hazard, the Magnificent World, to cite a couple of examples from (consults watch) about 25 years ago, still have a great deal to be said for them, although I'm not totally sure about Maze at this point. If we want to go back a little further than that, Leda, Fantastic Adventures of Yohko and Aura Battler Dunbine probably haven't been completely forgotten, nor indeed Super Dimension Century Orguss, although it might be a stretch to make the definition fit that one. I hesitate to say anything as sweeping as the huge increase in the volume of anime produced during the OVA boom of roughly 1985—1995 released a correspondingly huge outpouring of creativity, while the large volume required by the current distribution models winds up being mostly cookie-cutter drek, but I do think that the large budgets and somewhat indiscriminate funding of that period did contribute to the development of the art form.
