Last Friday, the expected order came down and my entire office is now working from home. I'm personally working from a card table scrunched up against the dining table, which is working out ergonomically much better than I feared, and it feels positively fancy compared to some of the photos circulating of people working from, for instance, ironing boards. I've replaced my bike-light rail-bike commute with a walk through the neighborhood before and after work.

As someone who was worried about spreading disease without realizing it, it helps to be able to say I am Doing Something. Look at me, being a responsible adult, staying away from people for the greater good! On the other hand, as someone who is able to keep working through this, I feel like it's my responsibility to keep the economy moving, and there's not a whole lot I can do right now other than order a bunch of stuff online. If the government could get busy sending my tax dollars to the people and businesses that need them to stay afloat, that would be great.

Meanwhile, everything is cancelled. Game Storm is trying to get a new date in the summer, and has an announcement coming up later today. The local gaming store has cleared everything off of its event calendar and started offering curbside pickup. The convention center is being converted into a temporary homeless shelter. The April conventions in Seattle are cancelled. The phrase "minimum viable Worldcon" has been used on the SMOFs mailing list.

Oregon hasn't closed restaurants completely, just banned dine-in, on the grounds that purveyors of prepared food are an important part of keeping elderly people in the rural parts of the state fed. Grocery stores are still reasonably well-stocked for most things, though store hours are being shortened to allow more time for restocking due to the greater throughput.

So yesterday evening, we stopped by the drive-through at the local Popeye's, and then hit Fred Meyer right before closing time when there were just a few other shoppers. That was my first time interacting with people who don't live with me in person since last Saturday, and hopefully the last for another week. I miss being around people. I think of myself as an introvert, but I need some social contact. Seeing them from a safe distance during my walks is going to have to do for now.

Both A-Kon (annual) and the ISDC (last here 13 years ago) have been cancelled for this year. So, for the first time in a long time, I have no explicit reason to be in Texas during May & June. Alas, there may be nowhere to go!
