I forgot to mention something last time: our second exciting near-accident. Somewhere in the flatter parts of Missouri, we we cruising along at the speed limit and suddenly realized we were coming up on completely stopped traffic. The SO started working the brakes, I hit the hazard lights, and somehow everyone got slowed down in just the right amount of time.

Day 15: Heading west out of Omaha on I-80, we had one last attraction to stop at. The Archway is an eye-catching museum built over the freeway at Kearney (pronounced CAR-nee), Nebraska. Inside is a museum covering the European-descended settlement of Nebraska and the history of transportation in the American West. We'd driven past it on a trip in 2012, and agreed that we really should check it out some time.

We stopped for the night on the outskirts of Laramie, easily our highest stopping point of the trip at an elevation of 7,165 feet.

Day 16 After hot weather the whole trip, this was the day it finally felt like fall. The trees were turning distinctly yellow, and I put on my light jacket when I went to stretch my legs before we packed up and headed out.

Somehow we made it on to I-84 and all the way back to Portland that day. Probably it helped that it was a Tuesday and so the roads were clear outside of the cities.

I forgot to check the odometer before we set out, but the total trip length was somewhere upwards of 7,000 miles.
