Leaving Facebook, day 2
Jun. 21st, 2019 06:18 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
I asked yesterday in some Facebook groups if anyone could recommend equivalent ones on Dreamwidth. No luck there, though a couple of people recommended ones on MeWe. I understand how someone who likes some aspects of Facebook might be looking for a less awful Facebook, but right now where I want to be is someplace that is completely not Facebook.
For lack of communities to join, I did a bunch of interest searches and subscribed to some of the more active accounts. (Hi, new subscribees who are dropping by to find out who the heck just subscribed!)
In one Facebook group where I thought I could appeal to its sense of social justice, I linked the Verge article, mentioned "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas", and suggested a couple places, including Dreamwidth, that it might consider moving to if it ever got uncomfortable on Facebook. This led to a meandering discussion about what it would ideally want in a new host. If only there were some place that isn't controlled by a huge corporation, doesn't make money by reselling its users' data, has properly threaded comments, and has a commitment to openness and transparency...
Oh well. Horses, water, etc.
It took me until today to notice the Feeds section. I'm now signed up for a bunch and that is definitely going to be a selling point to mention if I have the chance to try talking anyone else into coming over here.
